Child visas are available to: dependent/adopted/orphaned children of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Is the child in Australia?

The following visas are applicable

This visa allows a child to stay in Australia permanently and live with their parents.

With this visa the child can

The child must

  • be a dependent child of a parent who is an Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen or holder of an Australian permanent visa
  • be under 18 years, a full-time student aged over 18 and under 25, or over 18 and unable to work due to a disability
  • be single and dependent on the parent
  • be in Australia when the application is made and when we make our decision

This visa lets a child who is single and already in Australia stay with a relative if their parents are dead, can’t care for them or can’t be found.

With this visa the child can

The child must

  • be under 18 years of age, single and with no parent to care for them
  • have a relative who is a settled Australian citizen, Eligible New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident 
  • be in Australia but not in immigration clearance when the application is made and when we make a decision

This visa allows a child to stay in Australia temporarily while we process their parent’s permanent Partner visa application.

With this visa the child can

  • move to or stay in Australia until we decide their parent’s permanent partner visa application
  • travel to and from Australia
  • work and study in Australia

The child must

  • be a dependent child of the visa-holding parent
  • be sponsored by the nominator or sponsor of the visa-holding parent

Is the child outside Australia?

The following visas are applicable

This visa lets a child outside Australia move to Australia to live with their parents permanently.

With this visa the child can

The child must

  • be a dependent child of a parent who is an Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen or holder of an Australian permanent visa
  • be under 18 years, a full-time student aged over 18 and under 25 and financially dependent on the parent, or over 18 and unable to work due to a disability
  • be single and dependent on the parent
  • be outside Australia when the application is made and when we make a decision on the application

This visa lets a child who is single and already in Australia stay with a relative if their parents are dead, can’t care for them or can’t be found.

With this visa the child can

The child must

  • be under 18 years of age, single and with no parent to care for them
  • have a relative who is a settled Australian citizen, Eligible New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident 
  • be in Australia but not in immigration clearance when the application is made and when we make a decision

This visa lets a child who is single come to Australia to live with a relative if their parents are dead, are unable to care for them or can’t be found.

With this visa the child can

The child must

  • be under 18 years of age, single and with no parent to care for them
  • have a relative who is a settled Australian citizen, Eligible New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident 
  • be outside Australia when the application is made and when we make a decision
  • You must not marry or enter into a de facto relationship before entering Australia
  • You must not enter Australia before the person specified in the visa has entered Australia

This visa lets children adopted outside Australia live in Australia with their adoptive parent.

With this visa the child can

  • migrate to Australia as a permanent resident to live with their adoptive parent
  • study and access Medicare
  • apply for Australian citizenship if eligible

The child must

  • have been under 18 years of age when adopted, when they apply and when we make a decision
  • be outside Australia when the application is submitted and when we make a decision
  • be adopted or in the process of being adopted by their sponsor parent
  • You must not marry or enter into a de facto relationship before entering Australia
  • You must not enter Australia before the person specified in the visa has entered Australia

This visa allows a child to stay in Australia temporarily while we process their parent’s permanent Partner visa application.

With this visa the child can

  • move to or stay in Australia until we decide their parent’s permanent partner visa application
  • travel to and from Australia
  • work and study in Australia

The child must

  • be a dependent child of the visa-holding parent
  • be sponsored by the nominator or sponsor of the visa-holding parent
